Matte Paintings

Traditionally matte painting was a way of creating sets visually without the expense or technical difficulties associated with enhancing a location.Until the use of digital technologies matte painting for nearly 80 years was painted on a sheet of glass that was fixed to the ground in a frame positioned between the set and the camera.

This allowed directors such as Hitchcock and the like to enhance their films dramatically. This required an artist to have great technical and visual skills because it required the work to be carried out on location, constantly viewing the progress through the camera and dealing with the constant change in light and weather. Very occasionally this technique is employed today.
