Anifex | Between 1982 to 2002 JHD had been regularly painting back drops for an in Adelaide clay animation company called Anifex. In 20 years this company had grown into and still remains one of the most highly regarded animation companies in Australia and the world. In the last 10 years they have branched into other related technological areas. Many drops and visual items of different sizes and scale were produced often with flair, enthusiasm, and quality.

La Bohemian | The State Opera of South Australia commissioned JHD to produce the main set visual for their production of “La Bohemian” in 1999. The piece was made all the more difficult due to the walls leant back 5 degrees on walls that measured 10.000 wide X 7.000 high.

Anna and the King | The feature film Anna and the King in 1999, brought together crews from all over the globe. One of the major challenges was that all the back drops had to be painted on the ground in various workshops around the city as there were no workshops available with an internal height of more than 5 meters. The height of the smallest drop was 6 meters. We successfully completed the task and introduced new techniques.

2009 Magic Memories | Measuring 9.600 x 3.000 With a curved base, Magic Memories commissioned a backdrop in March 2009, that was a strikingly unusual but representation of the sea. This was so they would be able to take a photo of all people as they entered the Sydney Aquarium. They would then, at the end of their tour purchase a copy of the image with other associated Sydney Aquarium paraphernalia. The mural was coated with a special clear coating that had no sheen and protected it for cleaning.

Mask 2 Boxing sequence | Mask Boxing Backdrops for the feature film “Mask 2” there were a series of banners that had to be printed on vinyl. They ranged from 3 meters to 12 meters tall, so that the dressing of the arena, which was huge, be given a bigger than life feel. In order to produce finished art on that scale was not only logistically difficult but time and cost prohibitive. We suggested producing the original art digitally for speed and quality. The art had to be caricatured versions of the two lead actors and the feeling of olden day boxing posters.

2011 Estee Lauder TVC | There were a multitude of tasks to be performed for this particular job. Working out of Anifex's studio in Kent Town S.A. I had been original briefed by (director) Tim Piper and (make/up artist) Emma Hack as to the look and feel of the images and the technicalities were worked out as the project moved along. My advice and expertise were on hand to assist in other areas when required.

2002 Xmas Cave David Jones | During this period there were changes in large format digital printing. It meant the logistics of traditional painting, space and time, weren't an issue. One of the benefits was to eliminate the need to make a lot of last minute changes because the finished image was exactly what the artwork would look like.
